Robyn Anne Richter, 65, who served on the Pullman City Council for six years, died at 4p.m. Tuesday at St. Nicholas's Hospital of injuries suffered during a fall at her home last week.
She was born at Reidsville, North Carolina, the daughter of Melvin and Sara Ms. Richter was graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1948, where she majored in political science.
She worked briefly at Charleston and at Boston before moving to Pullman in 1951 to teach civics and history at Roosevelt High School. Ms. Richter shared her home in Pullman with a friend, Patricia Richards, since 1953.
Ms. Richter who worked as a clerk at Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith Inc. during summer became becoming the first woman stockbroker employee at the company in 1957. She served on the Pullman Library Board in 1954 for two four-year terms, was elected to the city council in '62, and re-elected in '65.
She was actively involved in the campaigns for John F. Kennedy in 1960, Robert Kennedy, George McGovern and Eugene McCarthy, and served as Robert Kennedy's county campaign coordinator and as McGovern's state campaign coordinator.
Ms. Richter also served three two-year terms as chairwoman of the County Democratic Executive Committee from 1964-65 and from 1968-71.
She was a member of the Mayor's Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors of the Kenmore Home for Unwed Mothers, the University Club, the ALCU, and Amnesty International. She was also the first woman to join the city's Rotary Club.
Survivors include her sister at Phoenix, Alvia Dey; her brothers, George of Reno, Nevada, Robert of Stanhope, New Jersey, and Thomas of Modesto California. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin, in 1958 and her mother, Sara, in 1973.
Viewing will be at 4-5:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. Friday at Littleton Mortuary at Pullman. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mortuary. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The Rev. Billy L. West will officiate.
